Patrol
Responsibilities
The Patrol Division is made up of 21 Patrolman. This division works 12 hr shifts from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm and 9:00 pm to 9:00 am. This division is comprised of four shifts each managed by a Sergeant. Officers of the Patrol Division are typically the first responders to dispatched or self-initiated incidents.

They often respond to:
  • Crimes in progress
  • Investigations of previously committed crimes
  • Situations of high-stress and a host of crimes
  • Investigations of traffic accidents
  • Traffic stops

New Officers
All new police officers are assigned to the Patrol Division for their field training that lasts approximately 12 weeks. New Officers who successfully pass the Department Field Training Program must then attend the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center for 14 weeks to become a Kansas certified law-Enforcement Officer.

Bicycle Patrol
The GBPD Patrol Division is also comprised of the Bicycle Patrol. Their purpose is to provide support for special enforcement such as downtown patrol during summer hours. Special events can also be supplemented by use of bicycles such as the 3iii show held at the fair grounds every other year. The Department entry team is made up of Patrol officers who receive special training in tactics and weapons. They provide support for high risk situations.

K-9 Unit
The K-9 unit is comprised of a patrol officer who works an assigned shift that best fills the need of the department. The K-9 unit is used for drug interdiction and fills in patrol as needed. Trained in primarily drug detection the K-9 unit is cross trained for tracking and apprehension.
