[ARCHIVED] Zoo Operations

zoo news

The Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo may be closed to the public but staff still operates at our normal levels of standards and care. The zoo field is no stranger to zoonotic diseases and we have training and knowledge on proper disinfection, PPE and how to limit transmission. Since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak we have been doing our part to practice social distancing among staff whenever possible as well as completing additional disinfecting of our shared areas. There has also been evidence recently that certain species of animals, including big cats, are able to contract the disease from humans. Our staff has added masks and gloves to our daily PPE routine when working in contact with animals and making their diets. We have also divided our keeper staff into 2 teams that don’t overlap, in the event someone becomes ill, we have another set of keepers that can fill in and make sure the animals are cared for. Our veterinarian staff continues to provide the same level of care as they always have as well. Many animals still need their physical exams so we still must conduct these and try our best to social distance when possible, as we do need to work in close proximity for these procedures. We are also still accepting raptors through our rehabilitation program as this is an essential service that we offer.
