[ARCHIVED] Police Dept. Adds Radar Speed Signs

News Stories for Website

The Great Bend Police Department Staff is pleased to announce the arrival of two Radar Speed Signs, to assist with traffic control and traffic data monitoring.  In the 2020 budget for the Great Bend Police Department, the Great Bend City Council approved the purchase of two portable Solar powered Radar Speed Signs. These signs will  initially be  posted in the 3000 block of Main Street and the 1400 block of 10th Street. The Street Department will place these signs in these areas as their schedule permits.  Below is some information about Radar Speed Signs for your information.

So, what are radar speed signs?

Radar speed signs, also known as driver feedback signs, are traffic calming devices designed to slow speeders down by alerting them of their speed. They are being used across the country, and around the world, because they are effective at slowing speeding drivers down.

Are radar speed signs effective?

Tests repeatedly show that:

  • Speeders will slow down up to 80% of the time when alerted by a radar sign
  • Typical speed reductions are 10-20%.
  • Overall compliance with the posted speed limit will go up by 30-60%.
  • Radar speed signs are particularly effective at getting “super speeders”—speeders driving 20 mph or more over the posted speed limit—to slow down.

Why do radar speed signs work?

Radar speed signs are effective because of Feedback Loops, a simple concept which states: “Provide people with information about their actions in real time (or something close to it), then give them an opportunity to change those actions, pushing them toward better behaviors. Action, information, reaction.”

Traffic Data Collection and Reporting with Street Smart Signs.

The radar signs purchased for Great Bend have a computer program called “Street Smart.”  Street Smart traffic data reporting software allows you to report, organize and analyze the traffic data collected from the radar speed sign locations. With the data conversion tool in Street Smart, the information collected by the radar speed sign is loaded into Excel ready .csv files. Street Smart can generate 35 charts and graphs with just a few mouse clicks.

These radar speed signs were designed to make roads safer for pedestrians and drivers, regardless of location: small town street or city highway, business and industrial campuses, school zones, parks, neighborhoods, military bases, and work/construction zones…anywhere excessive speeds are a problem. The Radar Sign is a permanent and mobile traffic calming solution for small towns, larger cities, school zones, and law enforcement. The Radar Signs are easily programed. The Radar Speed Signs are Wi-fi enabled allowing for quick and easy sign operation and data download. These Radar Speed Signs can collect and download data for analysis.

A Radar Speed Sign gives officers the ability to better manage their time and the flexibility in how the Great Bend Police Department can monitor and enforce speed limits within the City of Great Bend.

Law Enforcement Traffic Calming Solutions

One of the many duties of law enforcement is to help keep the roads safe. However, officers cannot be everywhere, all the time. Radar speed signs serve as an extra officer, 24/7. They reinforce speed limit awareness by alerting drivers of excessive speeds. And when used with the Street Smart traffic data reporting software, the radar speed signs provide key data to quantify speeding problems. This allows the police the ability to intelligently deploy limited police staff for enforcement.

Radar speed signs provide an effective, reliable, and affordable traffic calming solution for reducing speeding drivers. Tests repeatedly show that:

Speeders will slow down up to 80% of the time when alerted by a radar speed sign

  • Typical speed reductions are 10-20%
  • Overall compliance with the posted speed limit will go up by 30-60%

Posting a radar speed sign at the entrance of the city limits will send a message that speeding will not be tolerated in Great Bend.  Drivers will slow down, making the city streets safer for everyone.

School Zones:
Radar Speed Signs can be used with flashing beacons to create the most effective message to speeders around schools. The signs can manage multiple speed limits during the day and have an option to add a relay switch that will trigger beacons to go on when speeders are detected.

At some point in your driving career you will exceed the speed limit and most of us will get a ticket at least once in our lives. That doesn’t make you a bad person, but there are ways you can help prevent that. One is to be more diligent about your speed and the posted limits. The Radar Speed Signs will help to remind citizens and visitors to watch their speed while traveling through the City of Great Bend. The Great Bend Police Department is committed to cooperation with its residents and visitors.  The Radar Speed Signs will assist the police department in analyzing traffic trends and the affects in Great Bend. Great Bend Police Department will actively work with other departments and law enforcement agencies to develop strategies for successfully combating traffic activity in the area. Please drive careful, be aware of your surroundings, buckle up and be safe.
